· Follow the summary with the conclusion, i.e. the message you want the audience to take away from your presentation.

· Draw your audience's attention to any references you have drawn on for your presentation

· Thank your audience and invite questions.

Summarising

· So that explains my main point. Does anyone have any comments or questions?

· I'd be glad to try and answer any questions.

· Do please feel free to ask any questions.

Buying time

It's almost inevitable that someone will ask you a question you may not be prepared for, or for which you'd like more time to think about before answering. This is a normal part of academic presentations, and there are a number of phrases you can use to help you. Very often, they involve either reformulating the question or asking for clarification of its object.

· I'm sorry, I didn't  know what you said about ....

· If I have you correctly, your question is that ...

· I'm sorry, could you  repeat the question?

· Could you say what you  by ....

· So are you asking me ...

· Would you mind  speaking a little on what you mean by ...?
